Essential Oil Based Insecticide Fails to Eliminate Bed Bugs
There’s few greater pleasures than getting in a warm bed after a long day of work, but if you happen to find a couple of unwanted guests sleeping with you, you might not get much sleep.
Some sites report as many as 1 out 5 Americans has had or knows someone whose had a bed bug infestation. If you’re into essential oils, you’ve probably heard of essential oil based bug spray, but let’s see if it actually works.
The active ingredients in EcoRaider, an essential oil based bed bug spray include geraniol, cedar oil and sodium lauryl sulfate. Some pages suggests geraniol has a larvicidal effect on some species as well as a repellant effect on certain mosquitos and ticks, but “a ‘crushing’ efficacy should not be expected from natural products, comparable to that of modern synthetic insecticides”. However, in one study by the journal Insects the essential oil based bug spray-EcoRaider showed no significant difference in treating the bed bug problem compared to the pyrethroid neonicotinoid based bug spray- Temprid SC, neither really worked.
